First Comes the Inbound Marketing Internship Then Comes ... What?

Culture, Inbound Marketing

In case we haven’t had the chance to meet yet, I’m Jacob Lundy. Though most of my friends call me Juan Carlos. Those are my two middle names - and yes, I love the nickname. It’s cool. Anyway, you’re probably reading this and wondering what this guy’s all about, right? Well as an Inbound Intern at Leighton Interactive and recent college grad, I’m here to lay down what that means to me, what it might mean for you if you’re in the same boat, and some things for us both to keep in mind as we venture onto the next stage of our lives - however scary it may seem.

FINALLY FINISHING COLLEGE

First Comes the Inbound Marketing Internship Then Comes ... What?

Do you remember the late nights in college? Staying up all night because you didn’t get any of that paper done until the night before. It was intense, really intense - kind of makes you wonder why the heck you went through all of that, didn’t it? I’m here to tell you that graduating in itself is worth it. Regardless of the next job you have lined up or post-graduation life, take a moment to sit back and relax. You’ve earned it. We both have.

You see, some days I made the mistake of focusing too much on what’s to come next, rather than enjoying the sweet experience of being in school. It was a grand time. I made so many friends, joined a couple bands, and much more. By the way, if you’re thinking about joining a band, I highly recommend it. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Looking for your internship opportunity? We have it right here.

Prior to wrapping up the long rollercoaster ride we call college, I scored an internship with Leighton Interactive. I’m proud of this, mainly because I applied in 2016 and didn’t get the position. That didn’t deter me. I went out and gained more experience in any way I possibly could. Whether taking on another internship or developing my writing skills on my blog, I did everything I could to grow as a person over the last few years. And it was humbling to see that be recognized by the Leighton team in my most recent interview with them.

INBOUND INTERNSHIP AT LEIGHTON

If I could sum up my experience at Leighton Interactive in one word, I would say this - epic. From the moment I sat down in my comfy chair at my desk, I was handed real tasks and assignments. I wasn’t going off and grabbing people their coffee for them. Though, I would gladly bring someone coffee if they wanted to try some new beans. I’m kind of obsessed with the tasty brew. Drinking a cup of Joe certainly goes well with writing blogs too.

Some assignments entail revising previously written content and others are all about a campaign for a client. All of it has enthralled me. One of the coolest things I’ve learned here though is how to use a hyphen to further showcase your personality in your writing. Yes - I’m a writing junkie.

If you have the chance to take on an internship, do it! Not just to make your resume stand out, but to learn. Learning, for the sake of learning, seems to be easily overlooked in college. We were always so concerned with grades and what others thought of us, like professors and potential employers, that the pure essence of learning felt less important. Don’t think like that. Take a chance, apply for internships, try something new, and learn as much as you possibly can. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

NEXT PHASE

Getting my Bachelor's of Science in Marketing degree was no easy task. But it’s strange not staying late at the school library anymore or drinking a couple of beers to help get in the right mindset to write a 20-page paper. No matter how uncomfortable it makes me feel, it’s crucial to remember to move on to the next phase of life with open arms. I’m ready to overcome this awkward change of no more school and get into the think of my professional career. But first I want to remember one thing - take some time for me.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER

No matter where you are in your life, it’s never too late to sit back, relax, drink some delicious coffee, and appreciate where you are. I feel like I forgot that a few too many times. But no more. Of course, I’m looking for employment somewhere. But I’m also living for the experiences that not only lie ahead but the ones happening right now, right after college - as you and I both move onto the next scary, but exciting parts of our lives.
